Managing Hours of Service (HOS) for local drivers in the United States is now simpler with the introduction of the 150 Air-Mile Short-Haul exemption. This update reduces the administrative burden for drivers who stay close to their home base by automating the tracking of exemption eligibility.
By using this feature, qualifying drivers can operate without maintaining full Records of Duty Status (RODS) or ELD compliance, provided they stay within the 150 air-mile radius and meet shift duration requirements. This means less time spent on manual logs and more focus on the road.

Visual Air-Mile Burndown: A live "burndown" display on the dashboard shows you exactly how many air miles you have remaining. The indicator changes color from green to amber and red as you approach the 150-mile limit, helping you stay compliant.
Simplified HOS Rules: While the exemption is active, the mandatory 30-minute rest break is not enforced, streamlining your workday.
Smart Breach Notifications: If you exceed the 150 air-mile radius, 11 hours of driving, or 14 hours on shift, the system will instantly notify you and switch to standard interstate rules to ensure you remain compliant.
Work Reporting Location (WRL) Management: You can easily set or update your home base (WRL) directly from the EROAD Drive app at the start of your shift.
How it Works
The Short Haul exemption works by establishing a Work Reporting Location (WRL) at the start of a shift.
Eligibility Monitoring: The system tracks three main criteria: staying within 150 air miles of the WRL, not exceeding 11 hours of driving, and finishing the shift within 14 hours.
Automatic Transition: If any of these limits are breached, the "Short Haul" (SH) status is automatically disabled. You will be notified and the system immediately begins enforcing standard HOS rules, including the 30-minute rest break.
Post-Breach Re-enablement: If a breach occurs, you can manually re-enable the SH status for the remainder of the shift to keep the 30-minute break unenforced, though the system will no longer track eligibility for that specific day.
Activation
To use this feature, an administrator must first enable it in the back office:
In the MyEROAD portal, open the Driver profile.
Toggle the Interstate short haul exempt setting to On.
Save changes to update the driver's device.
Once enabled by an admin, drivers can manage the exemption on their device:
Navigate to Rules & Availability.
Toggle Short Haul Exemption on or off as needed.
Availability
The 150 Air-Mile Short-Haul Exemption is available for United States customers using EROAD Drive APK version 1.16.0 or later. This is a General Availability release.
